The Cimabue colored and gold patinaed ceramic Crucifix is a handcrafted product, manually produced according to the oldest traditions of the craft.
Cimabue was one of the most important painters of Byzantine art.
To obtain the cold-painted ceramic, the base is mainly made of terracotta objects produced with majolica clay: it is a smoother clay and allows for easier painting of the object. Initially, we give the object a white background.
Subsequently, we hand-color it using water-based tempera paints.
The artist mixes the colors and brings the object to life, reproducing, for example, the pinkish color.
To conclude, we apply a protective layer to best preserve the previously applied colors and apply a coat of wax where needed for aging.
Therefore, the object will have vivid and slightly shiny colors, just like in a painting.
Gold is then applied to the object. We do not apply simple mecchia (an alcohol-based varnish applied to silver leaf so that the silver resembles gold) but rather real gold and silver leaf with a very long application process.
In fact, as a first step, we apply a burgundy red background that will be used for the points where the gold leaf will not (intentionally) adhere to the object.
Subsequently, we must apply a mission (a sticky liquid) to the item so that the gold and silver leaf can adhere.
To conclude the finishing, we give it an antique look and protect it with waxes that will give it a shiny appearance.
