Madonna with Elaborate Enameled Colored Ceramic Base

The Madonna with an elaborate enameled colored ceramic base is a handcrafted product, manually produced according to the oldest traditions of the craft.

To obtain the enameled product, depending on the effect we want to give the object, we use white refractory clay which gives the product a bright and homogeneous color.

We use majolica clay in items where we need to highlight, in the most prominent points of the object, the dark of the underlying terracotta. This better defines the lines (for example, of a face).

This clay is used with white enamel.

We mold and hand-finish the terracotta base: then we put it in the oven for the first firing at 1000 degrees.

Once out of the oven, the piece moves to the second processing phase. We apply a special rubber with a brush that will solidify, thus preventing the enamel from adhering to the areas that must remain white.

After that, using a special gun, the enamel is applied by spray, appearing as a powder and a different color from the one we will have at the end of the process.

After the enamel has dried, we begin to remove the previously applied rubber, being very careful not to touch the enamel. Furthermore, another coat of transparent "crystalline" enamel will be sprayed, giving the product a shiny finish.

When this enamel has dried, it will be fired a second time at 900º, permanently bonding with the base piece.

Once out of the oven, the enamel will have taken on the desired color and the object will have a bright and glazed effect.
