The Madonna and Child in travertine-like ceramic and gold is an item handcrafted according to the oldest traditions of the craft.
This finish was invented by the company Cestenoli and is so called because its appearance is very reminiscent of the color of the sedimentary rock "travertine": although it tends more towards white.
We use an element that dissolves during the first firing, leaving tiny holes throughout the object.
Particular is also the clay used for this finish which after the first firing (biscuit or rather semi-finished product) the base on which the color is applied appears pink.
Therefore, after 7 coats of colors and patinas, the item we have worked on will appear white but not too white, with a pinkish background where, in some less prominent points, a slightly worn appearance will be visible due to the effect of the micro-holes.
We apply gold to the object.
We do not apply simple Mecca gold: an alcohol-based paint applied to silver leaf so that the silver resembles gold.
We use real gold and silver leaf with a very long application process.
In fact, as a first step, we apply a burgundy red background that will be used for the points where the gold leaf will not (intentionally) adhere to the object.
Then we must apply a sizing (a sticky liquid) to the item so that we can make the gold and silver leaf adhere.
To conclude the finish, we give it an antique look and protect it with waxes that will give it a shiny appearance.
